Why distance changes the economics of corridor acquisition

Corridor work is priced by logistics, not airspeed. Access, repositioning and mobilisation dominate the cost structure long before the aircraft matters.

A corridor project is a logistics problem with a sensor attached. Two projects with identical linear extents can differ substantially in cost because one has road access every few kilometres and the other does not.

What actually consumes the day

  • Travel to the corridor and between access points
  • Landowner, operator or rail-authority access coordination
  • Setting up and tearing down at each launch position
  • Repositioning crew and equipment along the alignment
  • Ground control or check measurements where the intended use requires them
  • Weather and operational holds
  • Only then: the time the aircraft is airborne

Why the per-kilometre number misleads

Per-kilometre pricing implies a linear cost curve. Real corridors are not linear: a remote 5 km section behind a locked gate with no road access can consume more field effort than 20 km along a maintained right-of-way. When comparing proposals, compare assumed access and field days — not the unit rate.

Where repeat capture changes the maths

Mobilisation is largely fixed per visit. Projects that need the corridor captured repeatedly — construction monitoring, vegetation cycles, encroachment tracking — should plan the repeat schedule at the outset, because the marginal cost of a second, well-planned pass is very different from the cost of a second, unplanned mobilisation.

How to scope a corridor sensibly

  2. 02Map access: gates, crossings, road proximity, permission holders.
  3. 03State the information requirement — surface, structure, condition, change.
  4. 04Decide whether the capture will be repeated, and on what interval.
  5. 05Then select the sensor and operating approach.
