The operating environment
Rail infrastructure is linear. Field access is not.
The challenge is often not collecting one point of information. It is reaching enough of the corridor, frequently enough, without turning every assessment into a large ground mobilization.
Distance
A few kilometres of railway can require multiple access points, repeated vehicle movements and significant field time.
Access
Cuttings, embankments, bridges, vegetation, private access restrictions and remote ROW can make conventional observation slow.
Safety
Rail environments introduce moving equipment, uneven terrain, work zones and other field exposure.
Information gaps
Engineering and maintenance teams may be working from fragmented photos, isolated field notes or outdated corridor information.
Elev8 adds a current aerial and geospatial layer over the corridor so project teams can evaluate more before deciding where ground crews are actually required.
Use cases
Built around the corridor, not the drone.

Current conditions
Incident / emergency documentation
Rapid aerial documentation can help establish current conditions after washouts, flooding, derailments, slope failures or other infrastructure events. Elev8 does not hold incident-investigation authority.

Corridor intelligence stack
One corridor. Multiple intelligence layers.

Layer — RGB
Sensor — visual · nadir · RTK-supported
High-resolution visual acquisition establishes the base record: alignment, right-of-way width, access, structures and surface condition.
Illustrative visualisation of sensor layers. Not an Elev8 project dataset.
Sensor selection depends on the project requirement. Elev8 does not deploy LiDAR or thermal simply because the technology is available.
Linear infrastructure
The economics change when the asset keeps going.
Traditional site capture works well when the project fits inside a single work area. Rail corridors create a different problem: distance, access and repeated repositioning can dominate the field cost.
Conventional field approach
- multiple access points
- repeated vehicle movement
- multiple launches
- larger field footprint
- isolated observations
Corridor acquisition approach
- planned acquisition segments
- standardized coverage
- georeferenced corridor data
- consolidated outputs
- repeatable acquisition model
Remote corridor intelligence pilot
Validate the corridor before you scale it.
For larger projects, Elev8 can begin with a defined pilot segment to validate acquisition rate, access requirements, data quality, processing workflow and project economics before expanding across a longer corridor.
Suggested pilot scale — 10–25 km
Discuss a Corridor PilotComplex RPAS operations
When conventional VLOS becomes the operational bottleneck.
Elev8 operates under an issued Transport Canada RPOC and has Level 1 Complex capability. On appropriate rail projects, complex RPAS operations may reduce repeated ground repositioning, launch points and field exposure — but only where the aircraft, airspace, population environment and regulatory requirements support the mission.

Rail-industry experience
Rail is not just another drone vertical.
Rail operating environments, safety-sensitive field work, ROW conditions, remote access and engineering workflows shape how a corridor is planned and captured — long before an aircraft leaves the ground.
Rail context
We understand that access, safety, operations and project timing matter as much as the aircraft.
Field capability
Built for industrial and remote environments, not only clean commercial sites.
Regulatory depth
Issued RPOC and Level 1 Complex capability.
Geospatial output
Capture designed around what the downstream project team actually needs.
Specialized support
Already have drones? Good.
Routine visual capture often belongs inside an established internal drone program. Elev8 is most useful when the project requires something beyond that workflow.
- Remote deployment
- LiDAR
- Thermal
- Large / linear acquisition
- Extra field capacity
- Complex operations
- Specialized data products
Use the internal drone when it makes sense. Bring Elev8 the difficult corridor.

Common questions
Rail acquisition, answered directly.
Does Elev8 perform railway inspections?+
Elev8 provides aerial and geospatial data acquisition and visual documentation. Formal railway inspection, engineering conclusions and regulated professional assessments remain with appropriately qualified personnel.
Can Elev8 work with our engineering consultant?+
Yes. Elev8 can operate as a specialist RPAS acquisition subcontractor to an engineering, geomatics or project team.
Do you provide LiDAR?+
Yes, when the project requires it. The specific system and acquisition approach are selected based on terrain, vegetation, required outputs and project economics.
Can you capture long rail corridors?+
Yes, subject to access, operating environment, aircraft capability and regulatory requirements. Larger corridors are often best started with a pilot segment.
Can Elev8 operate BVLOS?+
Elev8 operates under an issued RPOC and has Level 1 Complex capability. BVLOS feasibility is mission-specific.
Do you perform legal surveys?+
No. Elev8 is not an Ontario Land Surveyor. We provide aerial/geospatial acquisition and can work with licensed geomatics professionals.
Can thermal be used on rail infrastructure?+
Potentially, where the asset and use case support meaningful thermal interpretation. Elev8 can provide radiometric thermal acquisition and anomaly documentation; specialist interpretation may remain with the relevant technical professional.
Tunnels & enclosed rail infrastructure
Part of the corridor is not visible from the air.
GPS-denied acquisition may support project-specific data capture in tunnels, enclosed structures and difficult-access rail infrastructure. Elev8 documents condition and spatial information; regulated rail inspection decisions remain with the qualified professionals responsible for them.
