Mission requirement
What did the project team need to understand?
Elev8 acquired and processed a rail yard environment into multiple spatial representations from one aerial acquisition.
- 01Capture an operating rail yard environment from the air
- 02Produce 2D imagery of the yard
- 03Produce a 3D mesh of the same environment
- 04Produce a point cloud from the same acquisition
- 05[OWNER INPUT REQUIRED — confirm the acquisition purpose and any client context]
Operating environment
The site determines the acquisition strategy.
Rail environments constrain where an aircraft can be and how long it can be there.
- Environment
- Rail yard
- Layout
- Multiple parallel tracks and adjacent structures
- Operations
- Safety-sensitive environment — coordinated access
Site location is shown generalized. Precise coordinates are not published.
Mission design
Capture was designed around the required output.
Aerial imagery
USEDOverlapping photographic coverage was flown over the yard.
3D mesh
USEDThe imagery was reconstructed into a textured mesh of the yard environment.
Point cloud
USEDThe same reconstruction produced a dense point cloud of the yard.
RTK / GNSS
NOT USEDNot confirmed for this project. It is not claimed until verified.
LiDAR

Application
What was used, and what a dataset like this could support.
Project use — actual
- Elev8 has captured and processed a rail yard environment into 2D, mesh and point-cloud form.
Dataset potential — not client use
- Existing-condition documentation of yard infrastructure
- Spatial context for rail engineering teams
- Baseline for a future comparison capture
- Planning context for works in a safety-sensitive environment
Potential applications only. Not performed on this project.
Professional responsibility
Data acquisition and professional interpretation are separate responsibilities.
Elev8 Visions performed the aerial acquisition and the agreed processing. Engineering, professional surveying, certification and regulated technical conclusions remain with the appropriate qualified professionals.
Operational lessons
What this project taught us.
Lesson 01
Rail access is the schedule, not the flight
In a rail environment the constraint is coordinated access and time on site. The acquisition plan has to fit the window it is given.
Lesson 02
Track furniture rewards denser coverage
Thin linear structure — rail, signals, switch hardware — reconstructs poorly from sparse imagery. Coverage density is what preserves it.
Result
What existed after the field team left.
The acquisition produced 2D imagery, a 3D mesh and a point cloud of a real Ontario rail yard from a single field capture.
